Styling a skull on a bookshelf
A skull is a classic still-life object. Treat it like one and it looks curated, not costume.
Mind the scale
A life size skull needs a shelf with at least 7 inches of height and some empty space around it. Small figurines work in gaps between books or on a stack laid flat.
Choose one color story
Aged white skulls sit well with old books, brass and wood. Matte black suits white shelves and modern rooms. Floral and painted skulls bring color to neutral spaces.
Use it as a bookend
Resin skulls are heavy enough to hold a short row of paperbacks upright. Put one at each end of a shelf for symmetry.
Add something living
A succulent in the skull planter or trailing ivy nearby softens the look and makes it feel intentional.
Dial it up for October
Add candles (battery ones near resin), dried flowers and a dark cloth. After the holiday, remove the extras and leave the skull.
